This article is a critical introduction to the Italian translation of Meyer's Canova monograph (1898), it focuses on the editorial process and on the use of photography during this early stage of popular art history. Further consideration is given to Meyer's critical point of view in the context of the German fin-de-siècle art discourse (Burckhardt, Springer, Bode, Wölfflin, Hildebrand).

A most original interpretative hypothesis is proposed here with regard to the extraordinary masterpiece by Alberto Burri (1915-1995), that is to say, the brilliant Grande Cretto, located near Gibellina vecchia (old Gibellina), in Sicily. This work, borrowing from Land Art, constitutes a unicum on the world scale, in terms of its vast size and profound significance. Built in cement over the rubble of the old Sicilian town, devastated by the1968 earthquake, it comprises, at the same time, sculpture, architecture and urban-planning. Art-writing in the second half of the twentieth century from a rhetorical strategy to an autonomous genre · The essay offers an analysis of the transformations that occurred due to the dynamic artistic debate in the United States in the second half of the 20th century, when art-writing and art criticism were constantly subject to redefinition with regard to an object – the artwork – which was gradually becoming undetermined.
